Honouring the Land Acknowledgement and Reflecting on Truth and Reconciliation

On September 27th, we had the honour of gathering for a deeply meaningful ceremony to acknowledge the land, created in collaboration with our Indigenous partners. The event began with a moving greeting in Mohawk by Elder Joseph Deom, who later translated his words, allowing us to fully appreciate the depth of his message.

The highlight of the event was a powerful presentation on Truth and Reconciliation by Kanerahtiio Hemlock, Teacher at the First Nations Regional Adult Education Centre. His words carried the weight of a history that must be acknowledged and understood if we are to move forward together. He spoke with great courage and clarity about the painful truths that continue to shape Indigenous communities, sharing stories that, while difficult to hear, are essential for all of us to confront. His presentation called on us to reflect deeply on the responsibilities we carry—to listen, to learn, and to commit ourselves to ongoing action and healing. The honesty and vulnerability he shared with us was a profound reminder of the work that still lies ahead.

Following the presentation, we inaugurated a plaque featuring the land acknowledgement, accompanied by a piece of art that embodies its message. We were also honoured by the presence of Carina Deere, Centre Director of the First Nations Regional Adult Education Center, whose participation added further significance to this meaningful occasion.

A Heartfelt Thank You

We extend our deepest gratitude to Kanerahtiio Hemlock for his generous willingness to share his knowledge with us. His presentation illuminated truths that, though difficult to face, are critical for our collective understanding and growth. Thank you for helping us navigate through a history of profound loss and trauma, while also revealing the resilience and strength that continue to define Indigenous communities. We recognize the emotional burden of carrying and sharing these stories and are profoundly grateful for the courage it takes to bring these truths to light.

As we reflect on your presentation, we are reminded of our own responsibility to share this knowledge with our employees and students, ensuring that we honor these truths in our actions moving forward.
